South Carolina rushed out to a 28-0 first half lead enroute to a 33-19 win over UNC-Wilmington Friday night.
Played on the UNC-W campus, junior Nick Dubois (wing), Charlie Phelan (second row), Charlie Feehan (wing) and Carter Saleeby (flanker) dotted down trys in the first half. All scores were converted by flyhalf Charlie Dwyer.
In the second half, though, the Gamecocks throttled back. The feisty Seahawks put down three trys while USC reserve flanker Landen Day scored a try for the Gamecocks at the 60-minute mark.
“Our set pieces improved,” said Coach John Roberts. “While our backline hummed at times, we had way too many handling errors, and we lacked defensive tenacity in the second half. We played very well at times but need to work on putting together a complete game.”
The Carolina reserves put together a solid outing in defeating the Seahawks b-side 15-5. Kevin Golden (freshman), Nick Clarke (prop) and Nick Irvine (center) scored trys for the Gamecocks. Wilmington’s lone try came near the end of the game.
With improved team depth the Gamecock reserves have outscored their last two opponents 20-5.
South Carolina is idle this weekend and return to action September 28 in a home contest against Central Florida.
