A candlelight vigil will be held 7:30 p.m., Wednesday on the Horseshoe to remember Erik Elken, a University of South Carolina junior and member of the men’s rugby club, who passed away Tuesday after a battle with cancer. All are invited.
A Pennsylvania native and graduate of Conestoga High School, Elken was an accounting major. A 6’5, 243-pound lock, “Big E” was a two-year starter for the Gamecocks. While Elken was a dominant player, he is most remembered for his gentle spirit, faith and sportsmanship.
He led the club’s bible study, prefaced each contest with a team prayer, and always had a kind word and shoulder for anyone who was suffering difficulties.
“Erik was the best among us, and we don’t say that because he’s passed,” said Head Coach John Roberts. “He was a light on our team. Our prayers are with Leslie (his mother) and the entire Elken family.”
Elken left the team and university in January after a cancerous growth was discovered in his hip. He was later diagnosed with a very rare form of Stage 4 sarcoma. With good nature and a fighting spirit, he endured a major surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. He took a turn for the worse Monday and passed away Tuesday.
The USC rugby team provided support, prayers and encouragement for Erik throughout his journey. In April, the club sponsored an on-campus head-shaving fundraiser that raised more than $10,000 for Elken’s medical care.
A memorial service for Elken will be held 2 p.m., Friday November 28 at Great Valley Presbyterian Church in Malvern, PA.
